Backpacking Southeast Asia: A 2-Week Itinerary on a Budget
Southeast Asia has a reputation as the place where backpackers cut their teeth, and there's a good reason for it: it's genuinely possible to travel well here on very little money. Two weeks, one route, realistic numbers — here's how I'd do it if I were starting over.
The Route: Thailand → Laos → Vietnam
Overland travel between these three keeps costs down and avoids expensive short-haul flights. It's a well-worn path for a reason — infrastructure for backpackers (buses, hostels, SIM cards, ATMs) is easy to navigate even on a first trip.
Days 1-5: Chiang Mai & Pai, Thailand Skip Bangkok on the way in if you can — fly straight into Chiang Mai instead. It's cheaper, calmer, and a better base for temple visits, night markets, and a day trip to an ethical elephant sanctuary (do your research here; many "sanctuaries" still allow riding, which isn't ethical). From Chiang Mai, the winding mountain road to Pai is worth the motion sickness — hot springs, canyon views, and a laid-back town built entirely around travelers.
Days 6-9: Luang Prabang, Laos Cross the border by slow boat down the Mekong (2 days, genuinely relaxing) or fly if you're short on time. Luang Prabang is Laos's most beautiful town — French colonial architecture, saffron-robed monks collecting alms at dawn, and the turquoise Kuang Si waterfalls just outside town.
Days 10-14: Hanoi & Ha Long Bay, Vietnam Hanoi's Old Quarter is chaos in the best way — street food stalls on every corner, motorbikes everywhere, and coffee culture worth building a morning around. Book a 2-day, 1-night boat trip to Ha Long Bay from here; go with a mid-range operator rather than the cheapest option, since budget boats have a poor safety track record.
Realistic Daily Budget
- Accommodation: $8-15/night for a private hostel room or basic guesthouse
- Food: $10-15/day eating mostly street food and local restaurants
- Transport: $5-10/day averaged across buses, tuk-tuks, and the occasional flight
- Activities: budget $20-40 for the trip's few splurges (Ha Long Bay boat, elephant sanctuary)
Total: roughly $30-45/day, or $450-650 for two weeks, not including international flights.
Three Things I'd Do Differently
- Get a local SIM on arrival — data is cheap (a few dollars for weeks of coverage) and makes booking transport and finding food dramatically easier.
- Don't over-pack the itinerary. Three stops in two weeks feels slow at first and right by the end.
- Carry small bills. Vendors and tuk-tuk drivers rarely have change for large notes, and you'll end up overpaying out of convenience more than you'd like to admit.
Southeast Asia rewards a loose plan more than a tight one. Book your flights, pick your first hostel, and let the rest fill in as you go.
